Cooke had prompted a dangerous person alert on July 27 after Onion Lake RCMP responded to call that he was in possession of a firearm and causing damage at a home in the Molson Hill area. He fled the home before police arrived and was believed to still be in possession of a firearm.

Onion Lake RCMP found Cooke walking outside and he appeared to have a firearm. Police say Cooke ignored verbal commands from the officers to drop the firearm, and instead, he ran toward a wooded area.

Additional police resources were called, including officers from Turtleford RCMP, Kitscoty, Alta., RCMP, and the RCMP Critical Incident Response Team, which encompasses the Emergency Response Team and Police Dog Services.

Onion Lake RCMP worked with local band security to re-route traffic and ensure the safety of motorists. A dangerous person alert was issued on the SaskAlert website to inform the community of the incidents and instructions to maintain personal safety.

Officers searched for Cooke and cleared the wooded area and surrounding outbuildings.

About seven hours later, police received a tip from a member of the public that Cooke was inside a nearby home. They responded immediately and arrested him without incident.

Cooke was given a 12-month conditional sentence and 12 months probation on charges of assault with a weapon and attempting to unarm a police officer.
