Regina man to serve more time for assault

Accused has already spent 24 days in custody.

REGINA – A Regina man will spend more time behind bars after an assault last month.

Clarence Taniskishaynew, 53, appeared in Regina Provincial Court this morning via video from the Regina Provincial Correctional Centre, entering a guilty plea to one count of assault. Two other counts breach of probation and mischief were stayed by the Crown.

The Court heard that just before 5 a.m. on Aug. 21, police were called to a home on the 1000 block of Angus Street for a report of a domestic assault. The caller was able to leave the residence, and police observed injuries on the victim.

In a joint submission from Crown and defence counsel, a suggested sentence of 90 days in custody was proposed. Taniskishaynew has served 24 actual days, and with enhanced credit, would have 54 days remaining.

Court also heard of Taniskishaynew’s upbringing and struggles with addiction.

“You certainly haven’t had an easy life,” Judge Noah Evanchuk told Taniskishaynew before handing down his decision. “The Court emphasizes with that.”

He also pointed out that in the last 20 years, Taniskishaynew spent almost half of that time in jail, noting he hoped the “life-long path toward recovery can get going again.”

Judge Evanchuk accepted the joint submission, with Taniskishaynew to serve a further 54 days in custody.
