SASKATOON – Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) is investigating the Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) shooting of a man over the weekend.
On Feb. 2, SPS had started an aggravated assault investigation that involved firearms. They had a search warrant for a home on the 600 block of Lisgar Avenue in Saskatoon. They contained the home and the SPS Tactical Support Unit was helping SPS officers with the search warrant.
While the residence was contained, several people exited and were arrested without incident.
At about 2:19 a.m., on Feb. 3, a third person, a 34-year-old man, came out of the home and had a confrontation with police. A member of SPS discharged his service firearm, shooting the man.
SPS members contacted EMS and provided first-aid to the man until they arrived. EMS provided care to the man and took him to a hospital in Saskatoon, where he remains.
After police entered the home, they found a deceased body. They arrested Chantal Lee McLaren, 32, and charged her with first-degree murder.
Saskatoon police say the identity of the deceased is pending an autopsy, which is scheduled for Tuesday.
A SIRT team consisting of five SIRT investigators was sent to investigate the officer-involved shooting. SIRT will examine the conduct of police during this incident, including the circumstances surrounding the man's injury.
SPS will continue to investigate the initial investigation that resulted in the search warrant, as well as the investigation into the 34-year-old man and his actions. A final report will be issued to the public within 90 days of the investigation ending.
SIRT investigates alleged cases of serious injury, death, sexual assault or interpersonal violence arising from the actions of both on and off-duty police officers, or while an individual is in police custody.
