A Writer’s Odyssey: Communithon helps many organizations

WEYBURN - The 42nd annual Communithon will be held at the Weyburn Legion this Friday. I have had the honour of being a volunteer on the board for several years, with roles including Communithon chair, president of the former Weyburn United Way, and entertainment chair.

It is always amazing to see the amount of hard work and dedication that is put in by the many volunteers and community agencies to host the annual televised fundraiser. A lot has changed over the years, including offering an online link so anyone can watch the show, no matter where in the world they might be.

The one thing that has not changed is how much the Communithon helps the agencies. As a ‘community telethon’, the goal of the Communithon is to raise much needed funds to help support the programs and services provided by the community agencies. So instead of getting 10 different groups and organizations putting together fundraisers, they work together to host this one-day event.

Communithon highlights the many talented performers and entertainers in our community. People are encouraged to make pledges during the televised event, which will air on AccessNow Channel 7 here in Weyburn on Friday.

There is also a donation portal on the website at communithon.com. Over the past couple of years, the Communithon committee has created a great partnership with several of our local banks, who act as donation hubs ahead of the fundraiser.

For those that are unaware, United Way Regina helps manage the Communithon bank account. It is important to remind people that if they are mailing donations to make sure they are sending it to the right location in Regina, and it is also important to identify United Way Regina as the recipient when writing cheques.

Recently, there was great news from United Way Estevan that they reached their goal on air, during their annual telethon. Typically their telethon is two weeks before Communithon.

The goal for Weyburn’s Communithon is $82,023. That is a quarter of the goal that was reached in Estevan, so I think that realistically the Communithon should reach its goal on air too. It would be nice if we blast that goal out of the park, and ensure that our community agencies continue to provide their programs and services.

Together, as a community, we can support the Communithon! Hope to see many people there!
