Moonlight Movies has confirmed they are opening an indoor movie theatre for second run showings in Regina.

REGINA - Good news for local film fans: cheap movies are coming back to Regina.

It was announced this week that Moonlight Movies Cinemas will be opening a discount theatre at Golden Mile Shopping Centre, at 3806 Albert Street in Regina.

They will occupy the same location as the former Rainbow Cinemas discount movie theatre that closed last year.

The closure of the Rainbow was mourned by Regina movie fans who loved the cheap movie prices and its eclectic film offerings, as well as its famous popcorn. The early indication is that many of the most popular elements of the old Rainbow will return when the new Moonlight operation takes over.

According to their Facebook page, prices will be $4.99 plus tax for all shows and all ages except for Tuesdays. Taylor Toyota Tuesday will be half price at $2.49 per person for all shows and all ages.

There will be a concession area, and the new operators say they will have the same popcorn as the previous Rainbow Cinemas, as the previous operators had left behind the popcorn recipe at the location.

Their plan is to open in October, possibly as early as in a couple of weeks. The movies have not been announced yet, but they will offer second-run releases that will be available after they are done their first run showings at the major chains.

The new operators are the same ones who run the Moonlight Movies Drive-In on the rodeo grounds in nearby Pilot Butte. They had been considering adding a year-round home and had floated the idea in a Facebook post back in August.

“We are a small "mom and pop" type operation so at first will not be as polished as the previous operator. But we promise that if you are patient and support us we will keep upgrading and getting better,” they state on Facebook.

“This is a big undertaking. We are taking a huge risk. So we are really counting on your support!!”

More information can be found on their Facebook page Moonlight Movies, which also includes a link to their Facebook fan group.
