REGINA - Regina city council has passed a resolution clearing the way for residents to apply for relief under the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program.

Council voted in favor of a resolution to apply to the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency to be designated an eligible assistance area under PDAP. This is as a result of the heavy rain events on June 2 and June 7, 2023 which saw considerable flooding in the city.

The June 2 rain event alone saw 1.5 inches of rain fall in the city and resulted in several flooded streets and underpasses. According to the information provided to council by administration, the city received 282 service requests related to excessive water in residents' homes. Administration reported catch basins could not keep up with the demand.

The city had already filed a Request for Designation form with PDAP, and at council Wednesday administration confirmed the city was approved to receive PDAP funding. Council formally signed off in favor of that PDAP application in a unanimous vote Wednesday, which means claimants can begin the application process right away.

The PDAP program provides residents with compensation for non-insurable damage as a result of those rain events. To apply, residents should visit https://www.saskpublicsafety.ca/emergencies-and-response/provincial-disaster-assistance-program, call 306-787-7800, or email pdapdocs@gov.sk.ca.

"The City of Regina is grateful for this financial support," said Regina Mayor Sandra Masters in a news release. "It's vital that Regina's residents have the opportunity to apply for these funds to help cover the cost of repairs caused by heavy rainfalls.”
