The Yorkton Gardon Crushers female bantam hockey team started their season this past weekend in Yorkton, where they faced off twice against the Regina Cougars at the Kinsmen Arena. On Saturday, the Crushers came out on top with a final score of 3-0 and on Sunday, it was a 2-1 victory.

This is the second season for the team. Fred Schrader is the head coach of the team again this year, and said he is happy with the team’s first win.

“It’s nice to have the win. We still have some little things to work on throughout the year, but a good result for the first game,” he said.

Schrader said one area where the team needs work is getting the puck out of their zone, which is where they struggled in the first game.

The team has been together for about one month now, and has had a handful of practices.

Last year during their inaugural season, the team finished second in their league, losing to Moose Jaw in double overtime of the league final.

Schrader said they lost six girls from last year, and have recruited four new players this year, who are getting used to playing with the team.

“The girls all have their goals to improve on from last year,” he said.

With seven teams in their division, the Yorkton Crushers are on the road to another successful season in the female bantam division as they sit on their 2-0 record.
