The Yorkton Kinsmen Midget AA Terriers play in the South Saskatchewan Minor Hockey League. They are currently sitting in the second place spot in their league of 13 teams.

Their current record is 24-4-3, giving them a total of 51 points, just three points behind the first place Estevan Apex Bruins at the time of printing.

On Friday night, the Kinsmen Terriers played at the Kinsmen Arena to an almost-full arena. They faced off against the Melville Millionaires, and after a close game, they came out with a win. The final score was 3-2.

Yorkton’s first goal was scored by Reid Arnold in the first period, with the assists coming from Colby Vranai and Ashton Shewchuk. In the second period, MacKenzie Flett scored two goals. The first was assisted by Tyson Byman and Jake Huska.

Reid Arnold is currently leading the team in points. He has 40 to his name, stemming from 15 goals and 25 assists.

Second to him is Luke Schappert with 32 points coming from 18 goals and 14 assists.

After Friday’s game, head coach Chris Newans praised his players for both the game and the season they’ve had so far.

“I thought that we stuck to our systems and everything. We had a couple of turnovers that cost us but I thought our players came ready to play,” said Newans regarding Friday night’s game.

“We’ve had a very good season so far,” said Newans. “Players have bought in. And we have a huge support from our parent group and our management team, which includes all of our coaches and our manager.”

Newans said a huge part of the reason why they’ve had such a great season is because of the team unity they’ve built.

“We’re all on the same page and everyone has our ‘team first’ mentality. We don’t have any selfish people within our entire organization.”

Players Dakota Berezowski and Reid Arnold echoed remarks similar to their coach on why the team has been so successful.

“We have a team motto that’s ‘team first’ and that’s what we’re running by right now,” said Arnold. “We’re competing and working every day at practice, which goes into the games.”

Berezowski said, “We’ve played all around a good game. It’s hard to explain, but everyone has shown up to play.”

With only four games left in the regular season for the Kinsmen Terriers, playoffs are undoubtedly on everyone’s minds. But Newans said there isn’t a ton they plan on doing to prepare.

“The only thing we’re doing is tightening up our systems and to just keep going forward with what we’ve been doing,” he said.

The Kinsmen Terriers will host the Melville Millionaires again in their next home game, which will take place at the Farrell Agencies Arena on Thursday, Feb. 2 at 8:00 p.m.
