Terriers make Bantam draft choices

The Yorkton Terriers are hoping bloodlines matter. The local Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League franchise has selected Kishaun Gervais with their top pick in last week’s SJHL Bantam Draft held in Nipawin.

The Yorkton Terriers are hoping bloodlines matter.

The local Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League franchise has selected Kishaun Gervais with their top pick in last week’s SJHL Bantam Draft held in Nipawin.

Gervais, who was selected third overall by the Terriers is the younger brother of former five-year Terrier Kailum Gervais.

The past season the younger Gervais played with the Yorkton Bantam AA Terriers where in 30 games played he had 26 goals and 27 assists for 53 points. In nine playoff games he added 14 goals and 18 points.

In a release it was noted; “as the stats suggest, Kishaun is a top offensive player.  He possesses high skill, top speed and good vision.  His compete level has increased steadily over the course of last season. Kishaun was a key member of the Yorkton Bantam AA Terriers this past season where they won the SBAAHL championship. Kishaun is committed to play for the Yorkton Maulers next season.”

Overall at the draft Director of Player Personnel Garry Carson, GM Trent Cassan and Assistant GM Casey O’Brien selected six players.  After Gervais the Terriers took Austin Lamotte (15th Overall), Zachary Gabruch (27th Overall), Casey Mcdonald (39th Overall), Carson Dereniwsky (51st Overall) and Tyson Janzen (63rd Overall).

1st Round, 3rd Overall: Kishaun Gervais

2nd Round, 15th Overall: Austin Lamotte

Height:  5’7”
Weight:  140 pounds

General Information:  Austin is a hard-nosed small forward with a high compete level.  He blocks a lot of shots and finishes every check.  Due to injury, he was only able to play 19 games during the regular season, but still put up great numbers.  Austin captained the Sask Valley Vipers to the SBAAHL finals last season, where they lost to the Yorkton Bantam AA Terriers.  Next season, Austin will be joining the Prince Albert Mintos.

3rd Round 27th Overall: Zachary Gabruch

General Information:  Zachary is a big stay-at-home defensemen. He skates well for his size, and looks after his end of the ice.  He does so with a long reach, which keeps players away from his net.  He also makes a good first pass out of the d-zone, which is seen as a valuable asset to the Terriers.

4th Round, 39th Overall: Casey McDonald

Height:  5’6”Weight:  135 Pounds

General Information: Casey was one of the leaders of the West Central Wheat Kings this past season. He is a highly skilled offensive forward with a strong compete level. He was a top player on his team last season, and plays bigger than his height and weight would suggest. One of the key aspects about Casey that caught the Terriers’ attention was his performance in big moments, posting 7 points in 2 playoff games.

5th Round, 51st Overall: Carson Dereniwsky

General Information: Carson is a local player, and won the province with his team. He was a top 2 d-man for his team as well. Carson is relentless with his competitiveness, and uses his big frame to make it really hard for the opposition to drive to the net. Carson was a key defender for the Yorkton Bantam AA Terriers this past season where they won the SBAAHL championship.   

6th Round, 63rd Overall: Tyson Janzen

Height:  5’10”
Weight: 133 Pounds

General Information: Tyson is a stay-at-home defensemen, who is really physical.  He has solid skating ability, and battles hard in front of the net. Tyson has the potential to grow into a solid reliable defenseman.
