The Yorkton Terriers of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League picked up a win at home against the Melfort Mustangs on Friday, Oct. 21. The score was 4-1.

This was the first meeting of the season between the Terriers and the Mustangs. Last year, the Mustangs finished on top of the league.

The game started off at a quick pace for the Terriers. Shane Sherban scored on a power play just three minutes into the game, with the assist coming from Jordan McCausland.

Minutes later, Jared Legien connected with the back of the net, pushing the score up 2-0 for the Terriers. The assist from that goal came from Kevin Wolf.

Still in the first period, with only 1:45 left on the clock, Jordan Ross scores for the Terriers with the assist from Corwin Stevely.

The second period of play saw no scoring action, but a number of penalties  against both teams.

The third period started off with an early goal from Terriers player Carson Welke, with assists coming from Legien and LJ Naccarato.

Melfort was able to get one goal in with 5:56 left in the game during a power play. They brought more intensity in the third period, but weren’t able to come out on top.

After the home game, head coach and GM of the Terriers Casey O’Brien said the Terriers had a great week of practice, and it showed in the game.

“We did some things a little bit differently this week. We had some fun practices and some short practices, working on different things,” he said. “It paid off tonight.”

The lineups have been shuffled a few times throughout the season, but it looked as though the Terriers were really meshing well together on the ice during Friday’s game.

“That’s just part of developing chemistry within the line up. Guys get familiar with each other, so that’s kind of where we’re at right now,” said O’Brien. “Everybody’s healthy and everybody’s practicing together. We’re starting to find some line combinations.”

Shane Sherban, who walked away with one goal from the game, also commented on the lineups after the game.

“[My line] just got together a couple of practices ago,” he said. “We’ve been gelling together during practice and our chemistry is pretty good.”

“This game was really good for us. We worked the puck well and we followed the game plan, and everything went good.”

On Saturday night, the Terriers hit the road to Humboldt where they fell to the Broncos 1-0. Greg Maggio was O’Brien’s goalie of choice for the night, who stopped 36 out of 37 shots on his net.

The Terriers continue on the road for this week, but are back on home ice on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 7:30 p.m.
