BATTLEFORD - A little rain didn't dampen spirits at the Fred Light Museum's Family Fun Day on Aug. 8.
People of all ages came out to take in the festivities.
Town of Battleford Mayor Ames Leslie and Coun. Kevin Russell were among the volunteers who offered to take a dip in the Dunk Tank, as part of this fun fundraiser for the museum.
People took turns throwing a ball at the red button to see the volunteers get splashed.
"Regardless of the weather, it's great to see how the community comes out and supports this day," said Leslie. "There are a lot of families here and a lot of kids here. We're grateful to the museum and the museum board to put this on for our community every year, because it's a great way to make a full day event here in Battleford... There seems to be a lot of smiles and laughter here at the Fred Light Museum Family Fun Day."
Leslie has been volunteering for the Dunk Tank for about three or four years now.
"Days like today are chilly, but it's enjoyable," he said. "Watching the smiles of the kids when they hit that target and dunk somebody like Councillor [Kevin] Russell, or myself or the other people who go in, it's a small sacrifice to give them a little bit of laughter and good memories."
During the day there were also demonstrations of blacksmithing, wood turning and rope making.
Fred Light Museum volunteer Lorne Cooper showed the craft of rope making. He first learned how to make rope about 30 years ago when he was volunteering at the Western Development Museum in North Battleford.
"I just learned from showing up," he said. "It's been a passion over the years to do something like that."
Cooper enjoys the art of rope making.
"It's a way of sharing the history with the kids," he said.
He also meets many generations of people who come up and say how rope used to be made back on the farm 100 or 125 years ago.
"They share that information. So that gets me into rope making. And we see the smiles of 100s of kids there that really enjoy it," Cooper said.
