MEOTA — People will have a chance to tie on their runners and head out to the Meota 5 km walk/run fundraiser coming up on May 10.

Local resident, Charles Baillargeon is helping organize the event, now in its second year.

The event starts at 10:30 a.m. at the Meota Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, with opening speeches planned for around 10 a.m.

The cost to register is $10 per person or $30 per family, with all funds going to the Canadian Mental Health Association Battlefords Branch.

"There are not too many people in the community that haven't felt the stigmatism of mental health in a variety of different levels, from low to extremely high," Baillargeon said. "Whether you walk, jog or run, every step helps break the stigma and supports access to mental health resources in our community, so it's to get people out."

Participants will receive hotdogs, bananas, juice and cookies for taking part. The Catholic women's volunteers will be preparing the lunch for the event.

"It's kind of a Catholic Church outreach program. We're trying to break down from the four walls and do something that is beneficial to the community as well," Baillargeon said.

Discovery Co-op is sponsoring the lunch.

People can sign up for the event by calling Baillargeon at 306-713-1901.

Baillargeon encourages people to register in advance, but they can also sign up on the day of the event.

Last year, more than 130 people took part in the event, with more than $19,000 raised. This year, Baillargeon hopes to see about 150 people participate.

He said the walk/run is for all ages to attend and should be a lot of fun for everyone. It also includes some live music.

People may also donate, even if they aren't able to take part in the walk/run itself.

For those who can't walk or run the whole course, volunteers in golf carts will be driving around to give them a ride back if needed.
