Surrounded by family and close friends, Fred passecd away peacefully and without pain at home on May 4, 2017. Fred’s sense of fair play and kindness was stong but his fabulous sense of humour is what we will always remember. He touched many lives. He was a lucky man who had many blessings in his life. He loved his family: his soulmate, best friend, and wife of 37 years, Diane; his children: Clare, Glenn, Kim (Ian), Eric and Darryl; his grandchildren Angus, Jacqueline, Jennifer, Kara, Megan, Sara, and Lucy. He also leaves numerous nieces and nephews; in particular, Chari and Jim, Nancy and Mike, Taylor and Al, who were very special in his life. Fred was number 11 of 16 children born to Hedwig Hogg and Joseph August Langen. He is survived by brothers Henry (Bernice), Dave (Connie), Mark, and Dick; and sisters Hedy, Thea, Jean (Stu), Lil, Anne and Irma. Born in Lake Lenore, Saskatchewan, Fred moved to Humboldt as a teenager. He always loved flying. He started as a navigator with the Royal Canadian Air Force during the early 1950s and later he re-trained with the RCAF as a pilot. In 1957 he joined Canadian Pacific Airlines, which merged with Air Canada, and stayed with them until his retirement in 1993. Fred also loved sports, and was an accomplished athlete. In 1949 his high school curling team won the first Dominion High Schools Canadian Championship. In 1959 he won the B.C. Curling Championship and went on to the Brier. He gave up curling only last year, a champion to the end. In 2012, he was inducted, along with the Jack Thompson team, into the Saskatchewan Hall of Fame. Fred was also a long-time member of the Richmond Country Club, where he golfed and played tennis since 1985. And as much as he loved all those activ- ities, Fred was happiest working in his beautiful garden, and entertaining close friends at home where martinis were usually stirred, not shaken. There will be a celebration of Fred’s Life on Saturday, June 17, at the Richmond Country Club on Steveston Highway, Richmond, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Fred’s favourite charity, the Act West Community Foundation, established by The Dupuis Langen Group to support and advance single mothers through the funding of post-secondary education.
