NIPAWIN — A house fire in Nipawin claimed one life.

The Nipawin Fire Department was called to a structure fire in Nipawin on Jan. 13 at 10.55 a.m., said a media release from the town. Upon arrival, members found a fully involved two-storey structure fire. Engine 1 started suppression efforts immediately, followed by engine 2 securing the hydrant.

"It was known a resident was unaccounted for and firefighters directed all resources to search the main floor," the release said. "Despite these efforts, one individual was found inside who had perished."

The fire department said they removed the remains for authorities, then returned to suppression duties, eventually using heavy equipment to bring the fire under control.

The Nipawin Fire Department said this is an active investigation and no further details will be released.
