Hudson Bay's new pool was the highlight of 2023 for the town.

HUDSON BAY — There was one major highlight for the Town of Hudson Bay.

"Finally getting to open our new pool to the public," said chief administrative officer Amanda Purves. "Our entire community has been fundraising for several years for this project, so being able to open and have so many people come check it out was definitely the highlight of our year."

The Town also put the finishing touches on the new walking trail east of town.

The Town of Hudson Bay has went through a lot of staff changes in the last year. In the past few years the Town of Hudson Bay administration staff have bid farewell to some long time employees as they retired. Purves said although there is no substitutes for years of experience, change brings new beginnings, new ideas and opportunities.

“The major project on our radar is a leachate collection system at our waste disposal site, along with planning for future expansion. We want to focus on supporting our staff, both old and new, by providing them training opportunities so they are better able to serve our community. We also want to continue to support our local businesses, to rally to keep our local theatre alive, and to explore fundraising and grant opportunities to upgrade our pool shower house.”

Betty-Lou Palko, Hudson Bay's mayor, said exploration of kerogen and shale deposits has just started near Hudson Bay. Both are minerals that can yield oil and gas when processed.

"This is just in the initial stages of exploration and they are looking for shale that is close to the ground so they don’t need to dig so deep. They started this in December and will continue into February. We know we have the peat moss and we want to further development in peat moss development in the Hudson Bay area.”

Palko also said that with a new theatre board, they hope to keep this worthwhile entertainment going in their community.

“Our hopes that all of our irons that we are putting into the fire come to fruition. I hope all of our community has a wonderful Christmas and the very best New Year.”
