There is a new way to embrace, promote and feed arts and culture in the Battlefords - a new magazine, Feed the Artist.

Feed the Artist was created to showcase local talent and promote the arts and culture community in the Battlefords. It was developed by a group of volunteers throughout the Battlefords. The first addition, on Saturday, followed a flury of build up and excitement. The Feed the Artist launch capped off a week of dance, music and design in the Battlefords leading up to the final party.

Local funk band, The Cunning Men, started the evening of entertainment at the Chapel Gallery in just their third gig. The variety of instruments and excitement the young group showed on the stage spread to the crowd, as some danced enthusiastically, setting the mood for the rest of the evening. Later, the Saskatoon hip-hop group Zen Shin played for the attentive, appreciative audience.

The main reason for the gathering Saturday, was to promote the new magazine. Months of work by five editorial staff members and supporters finally were presented to the public.

Feed the Artist came to life with great support throughout the community and sponsorship, but also with the support of the Common Ground Collective members. CGC is a group looking to increase opportunities for members to co-operate and collaborate on joint initiatives that strengthen the community. CGC has 50 members ranging from performing arts enthusiasts, to photographers, to potters, to musicians and much more. Some CGC members were featured in the inaugural magazine.

Feed the Artist will be published twice a year, once in June and once in January with different themes for each issue. The first theme, fittingly, was seeds - a seed represents endless possibilities.

The January 2013 Feed the Artist magazine's theme is progress. The magazine's staff encourages submissions from before Nov. 1 for features for the next issue.

Magazines can be purchased from Battlefords Boutique, Freedom Skate and Snow, Crandleberry's, Classic Trading and the Allen Sapp Gallery and subscriptions can also be purchased.
