Paynton Volunteer Fire Department had a small but potentially out of control fire situation to tend to this past weekend.

A passerby noticed a fire in the ditch about 6 kilometres south of Paynton. His quick thinking got the team to the fire before it had a chance to spread too far. It is suspected a lit cigarette started the fire in the seemingly green ditch, but there is still a build up of dry grass underneath.

Without the wind, this fire may had never started, but in our area the wind is more often on than off. It is only because of the wind direction that the fire was stopped by the road. The alternative would have been a field of stubble and trees that led to many more of the same, which can take days to extinguish completely.

Please be sure to use the ashtray in your vehicle or purchase a smoke extinguisher ashtrays at any hardware/automotive store. This is only one of several fires that Paynton and Maidstone volunteers have had to contend with this spring.

If you are thinking about becoming a firefighter or would like to volunteer, pleas sign up at your local fire hall.

Paynton Farmers' Market is ready to start up for the season. Starting June 7 and every Tuesday until fall, the market will run at the arena from 4 to 6 p.m. The vendors who frequent the market are looking forward to the community supporting their hard work and effort this summer.

Bakers, growers, artists and crafters along with a couple of items ordered in like tea and coffee, books and local honey can be found at the weekly market. You can learn about the local history at the Bresaylor Museum table where books and art depicting the local landscape and buildings catch the eye.

Art, ceramics and photography and quilts are also great gift ideas and are all made by local artisans.

The market also offer fresh baking, jams and jellies and in season fruit and vegetables.

The Paynton Library table is host to books and puzzles that are going for a great price to raise cash for the public service.

Paynton's volunteer committee will be selling frozen pizzas to raise money for a flowerbed project beside the arena. The plans for the project will be on display at the weekly market where you can also put in your order for a specially made pizza.

The Coffee Cup Café also has a copy of the plans along with pizzas for sale seven days a week in the old credit union building. Come out and show how much you appreciate the entrepreneurial spirit shown by all the people willing to make the effort each week.
