MAIDSTONE — The Midwest Oilpersons’ Curling Bonspiel Jan. 27 to 29 was hosted by Lashburn and Maidstone Curling Clubs. Saturday night’s banquet and dance, featuring One Cent Melon, were enjoyed by all 14 teams who entered. Curling results: A event first - team Signature Safety, skip Aaron DeJong; runner-up - team Classic Oilfield, skip Cory Krepps; B event first - team Lyle Harley; runner-up - team Lifting Solutions Inc., skip Kurt Moore; C event first - team Bernie Scholtz; runner-up - team MTM. MHS senior girls’ basketball team travelled to Eatonia last Friday/Saturday for a round robin. They won both games against Eatonia but lost to Kindersley 30-23. The senior boys were in Paradise Hill for a tournament where they came in third.
In hockey, U9 Maidstone 2 (red) won against Hillmond Jan. 28 and in Lashburn against Lashburn 2 Jan. 29. U11 Jets hosted their tournament Jan. 28. Both Maidstone teams made it to the finals with the blue team winning 6-1. Jan. 29, U13 Maidstone won 2-1 in a shootout against Paradise Hill at home. U15 Jets hosted Goodsoil Jan. 29 and won 11-1.
Jan. 28 was ALS Night at the senior Jets game in Maidstone. They lost 5-0 to Meota but raised $1,056 to be donated to the ALS Society of Saskatchewan in memory of Bruce James. The 50/50 guaranteed $275 sponsored by Video Junction was won by Daegan Freyman. This was the last regular season home game for the senior Jets.
One of my all-time favourite fundraisers is coming up soon. Over the course of 47 years, the Kinsmen Foundation’s Telemiracle has raised more than $150 million to help Saskatchewan people. With a talented cast of returning and new hosts, Telemiracle 47 will run for 20 hours. Remember to “ring those phones” from 9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26. Donors can also go online year-round to www.telemiracle.com. All funds stay in Saskatchewan and while “miracles” vary, they all improve quality of life and independence for the recipients.
Ratushniak Elementary students are excited Telemiracle is coming. They’re raising funds by bringing $2 to buy a helping hand. We hope the school walls will soon be filled with hands. CIBC is also selling helping hands.
