Borden Golf Course held their annual tournament June 24 and the Borden 4-H Light Horse Club ran the concession booth. The tournament was a two-man scramble and winning the men's championship were Vern Meister and Verne Sylvester.

Borden Golf Course held their annual tournament June 24 and the Borden 4-H Light Horse Club ran the concession booth. The tournament was a two-man scramble and winning the men's championship were Vern Meister and Verne Sylvester. Second were Scott Sutherland and Jock Broncas and third were Eugene Wiens and Arnold Meister. In the men's first flight Ian Wainwright and Murray Derbowka were first, with 2nd going to Graham Derbowka and Lindsay Westad. Third were Ed Neufeld and Paul Hunchak. In the second flight Bob Herter and Mel Brooke were first and Tom and Dallas Burnett were second.

The Junior team was Connor Wainwright, Cole Sutherland and Brandon Shukin. Men's closest to the pin was Vern Sylvester, long drive was Bob Herter and longest putt to Scott Sutherland. Student closest to the pin was Brandon Shukin, longest drive by Connor Wainwright and longest putt, Cole Sutherland. They made a draw from all the players for a Stanley tool set and it was won by Brandon Shukin.

Friday, June 15 at 10:30 a.m. a group of Lions from Saskatoon arrived in Borden on motorbikes en route to Lloydminster during the Lions Ride for Dog Guides. Along with the bikes was a 1938 Chevy roadster. Borden Lions hosted a water and washroom break in Borden Hall.

Lions president John Buswell presented a $200 donation plus individual donations from the community. Firefighter Ian Tracksell presented $100 from the village of Borden.

Accompanying the bikers was Shane Fleming. Organizer Lion Tom Armstrong of Saskatoon Millenium Lions said Fleming was the inspiration for the event. Fleming is autistic. Miss Teen Saskatchewan World 2012, Savanagh Walker from Martensville, was also making the trip. Lion Tom Armstrong's passenger was Greta Sleeva who is a young 96 years old.

Another group of Lion Bikers from Prince Albert was to meet the Saskatoon group in North Battleford for lunch before continuing to Lloydminster. Armstrong reports the total raised for the Lions Guide Dog program was about $9,000. It costs about $20,000 to train a guide dog at Lion facilities in Oakville, Ont.

Elementary school athletes from Perdue School competed against Borden School athletes at a hi lo meet June 13 at Borden.

Winning medallions for super highs were Sydney Schmidt and Owen Dyck for six and under, Savannah Sutherland for seven and eight years and Levi Gough, Natalie Anderson and Kirsten Szwydky for the nine- and 10-year-olds.

Borden athletes also made their mark in track and field events. At the conference level, 39 athletes participated in 86 events. At districts 34 of those 39 qualified in the top eight in 57 events. Five of 22 eligible Grade 9 to 12 placing in the top two of their events advanced to provincials - Deanna Wall in senior high jump, Allison Meister in junior girls' 800 M, Emma Pidwerbesky in midget girls' 1500m, Jasmine Bezugly in midget girls' 800m, 1500m,3 000m and triple jump and Duncan Sutherland in midget boys' 400m, 1500m and 3000m.

Four athletes broke eight school records - Cole Sutherland in bantam boys' 100m, shot put and discus, Jasmine in 800m and 1500 M, Duncan in 1500m and 3000m and George Hembery in senior boys' 100m hurdles. Jasmine also set two district records in midget girls' 1500 and 3000m. Borden School won the Kirkpatrick Award with a score of 18 points per athlete. Cole won the bantam boys' aggregate medals and Jasmine the midget girls' aggregate medals at both conference and district competitions. At awards night three medallions were awarded to Cole, Jasmine and George.

The Borden School Community Council held a barbecue prior to the school's awards night June 18. Chris Anderson and Robynn Pidwerbesky were MC for the program. After Mr. Broughton's opening remarks, the awards were handed out.

The $500 Affinity Credit Union scholarship and the $1,000 ReMax scholarship went to Michael Crabb. The Lions post secondary $500 award had gone to Stephanie Derbawka earlier.

On behalf of the Borden SCC, Tony Martens presented principal Dean Broughton with two gravity chairs. Broughton was recognized for providing a unique school culture, his work on the provincial leadership assessment, coaching volleyball and his motto of teaching whole growth of the students.

Miss Doell's Grade 3 and 4 class received the Community Service award for going every week to read to the care home residents. Another community service award for her work in the community was given to Celeste Lumgair. The Year book reps - Dani Joynt Skillingstad, Courtney Wainwright, Madison Sutherland and Nicole Tracksell - were awarded recognition certificates. Appreciation certificates were awarded to Robynn Pidwerbesky and Jasmine Bezugly.

Lions president John Buswell presented a plaque for public speaking to Darcy Tkazcyk and band awards had been given earlier to George Hembery, Tyrell Sargent and Michael Crabb, Michael won the Grade 12 bursary and Aryn Polichuk was the most outstanding jazz musician.

Athletic awards presented were: most deserving (volleyball) Cullen Sutherland, Kristie Hembery, Jackson Wiebe and Madison Sutherland; (basketball) Duncan Sutherland, Emma Pidwerbesky, Emma Prescesky, Josh Schroeder and Dani Joynt Skillingstad; (badminton) Cullen Sutherland and Connor Wainwright; (cross country) Emma Pidwerbesky ; (curling) Sara Prescesky.

Receiving silver goblets as athletes of the year were juniors Duncan Sutherland and Emma Pidwerbeskyand seniors Jackson Wiebe and Robynn Pidwerbesky.

Earning citizenship awards were Nick Siebert, Brook Faith, Natalie Anderson, Graham Sargent and Tyrell Sargent. Leadership awards went to Teaira Tracksell, Zach Martens, Rachel Sutherland, Jasmine Bezugly and Robynn Pidwerbesky.

Earning medals as most improved students were Chloe Redhead, Jade Matte, Colton Thiessen and Sara Prescesky.

On the honor roll with averages of 80 to 89.9 per cent were: Grade 7 - Mckinley Martens and Brett Reiter, Grade 8- Justin Barth, Brooklynn Gader, Mackenzie and Wyatt Piprell, Cole Sutherland; Grade 9 - Andrew Derksen, Kristie Hembery and Emma Prescesky; Grade 10 - Avery Fairbrother, Deidre Hebig, Connor Wainwright; Grade 11 - Chris Anderson, Aryn Polichuk, Deanna Wall and Jesse Wensley; Grade 12 - Dustin Bezugly, Michael Crabb, George Hembery, Danielle Joynt-Skillingstad, Tyrell Sargent, Madison Sutherland, Nicole Tracksell and Courtney Wainwright.

On the honour roll with distinction for marks 90 per cent or above were: Grade 8 - Aidan Loessin and Graham Sargent; Grade 9 - Jasmine Bezugly, Emma Pidwerbesky and Duncan Sutherland; Grade 10 - Myron Metanchuk; Grade 11 - Allison Meister and Robynn Pidwerbesky; Grade 12 - Lucas Julseth and Jackson Wiebe.

Receiving certificates for highest averages were Mckinley Martens (87.1 per cent), Adian Loessin (93.9), Jasmine Bezugly (95.3), Myron Metanchuk (90), Robynn Pidwerbesky (92.6) and Lucas Julseth (93.2).

The Governor General Award for 2011 Grads went to Melissa Saunders with an average of 86.77 per cent and runnerup was Tom Wensley with a 86.72 per cent.

Radisson Royal Purple Awards sponsored a poster, essay and video contest earlier in the year. Earning cash prizes for placing in the provincial competition were: Noah Braun $25; Brooklyn Brazeau $125 and Danika Pidwerbesky $75: Robynn Pidwerbesky, Dani Joynt-Skillingstad, Danielle Brown and Courtney Wainwright $125. Borden School received $350. Maymont School student Allison Wawryk received $37.50 and Maymont School received $37.50. The prizes were presented at awards day by Lorraine Olinyk and Audrey Baker.
