Speers Recreation Board hosted a Pirate Party in the Park June 4 to celebrate Parks and Recreation Month.

Approximately 50 people attended the afternoon event that started with participants being assigned to one of four pirate crews. Once the crews were assembled, everyone decorated their own pirate hat and eye patch and applied tattoos and face paints. They also came up with a name for their crew and designed a flag.

The crews then faced off against each other in games of tug-of-war, three "pegged" racing, cannon ball toss (water balloons) and boat racing. Everyone showed great team spirit and were rewarded with gold coins.

The crews were then sent on a treasure hunt for garbage around the community and returned to the recreation centre for hotdogs and ice cream. Door prizes were awarded during the meal.

Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association sponsored the event. The Nicholsons provided the hotdogs and the ice cream was provided by the Jacksons. The Cunninghams contributed additional door prizes.

Those who turned out ensured it was a fun afternoon.

Speers Recreation Centre hosts bi-weekly jam sessions. The toe tapping sessions will be June 24 and July 8 from 2 to 7 p.m. with supper available for purchase. Everyone is welcome!
