Chinmoy Deb Roy is a million dollars richer, thanks to a free ticket. The Saskatoon resident won the Lotto 6/49 guaranteed $1 million prize on the Saturday, Oct. 19 draw.
Deb Roy discovered his windfall when he stopped to gas up his vehicle. While in the gas bar, he gave a couple of lottery tickets to the clerk to check. He won $10 on one of those tickets, but the next one brought the clerk up short.
“She told me, ‘I can’t pay you that much,’” he remembered. “She told me I won $1 million. I said, ‘Really?’”
Once he was sure the win was real, Deb Roy went home to share the news with his family.
“I told them all to come into the living room, and I told them, ‘Today, one thing happened,’” he said. "'Today I checked my ticket and won one million dollars.'"
Deb Roy said he hasn’t made any specific plans yet for his windfall, although he said the prize will help in paying bills and assist his children’s educations.
He added that he plans to keep working.
“I feel better when I work,” he said. “I want to have something to do.”
Deb Roy’s winning free Lotto 6/49 ticket was issued by Acadia Petro Canada, located at 3401 8th Street East in Saskatoon. The winning guaranteed prize draw number on Oct. 19 was 25911293-01.
