Accused dangerous offender with semi-auto wants QB judge alone trial

Robin Wuttunee is a court designated Dangerous Offender

LLOYDMINSTER – A North Battleford man accused of going to Onion Lake Cree Nation with ammunition in a duffle bag and a semi-automatic rifle wants to be tried by judge alone in Battleford Court of Queen’s Bench.

Robin Dean Wuttunee, now 44, appeared in Lloydminster court Wednesday by CCTV from the Saskatoon Correctional Centre. Wearing a jail issued orange T-shirt, he sat with his arms crossed not saying a word.

Wuttunee has been in custody since he was arrested July 17, 2021, on Onion Lake Cree Nation after the Nation’s security checkpoint allegedly found a semi-automatic rifle and ammunition in a bag belonging to Wuttunee. The Onion Lake RCMP were called and he was arrested.

At the time Wuttunee was wanted on multiple outstanding warrants out of Alberta and was prohibited from possessing firearms. The RCMP also said that Wuttunee is a court designated Dangerous Offender. Wuttunee was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, two counts of possession of a firearm/ammunition in a vehicle, unauthorized possession of a restricted/prohibited weapon with ammunition, unauthorized possession of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a prohibited device, unsafe storage of a firearm, five counts of possession of a firearm contrary to a prohibition order, and three counts of failing to comply with a release order.

Legal aid lawyer, Andrew Lyster, told the court that Wuttunee’s other charges are expected to be concluded in provincial court May 18.
