The former longtime reeve of the Rural Municipality of Battle River No. 438 has passed away.

Joseph Beckman died earlier this month. He had been reeve of the R.M. for an incredible 55 years, having been elected in 1965.

Joseph Beckman Road was named for Beckman in 2019 while he was still in office.

Beckman also served on the boards of Table Mountain, Battleford Union Hospital, Battleford Fire Protection Services, Sask Wheat Pool and the United Grain Growers. He received the lieutenant governor’s award for outstanding service to rural Saskatchewan in 2014, and also received the Canada 150 award.

At Battleford town council \ Monday, Mayor Ames Leslie paid tribute to Beckman, saying he was “pretty sure” his 55 years as reeve was some sort of record for rural municipality leadership. He extended his condolences to Beckman’s family.
