Carlton Trail students get a little extra help before the holidays

Twenty-two Carlton Trail Regional College students got a little extra help at the Carlton Trail Regional College Award Presentation on Dec. 15.

Students all need a helping hand financially, says Marketing Facilitator,Val Koroluk

“They have enough to worry about with school and studying. Some people have quit jobs to take education to further themselves.”

A total of $43,200 worth of awards were given out from two different categories; one based on marks, the other based on applications submitted by the students.

Koroluk says that the awards committee was looking at their answers on why they enrolled in the program, plans for after the program and their demonstration of their financial need.

“It was a variety of different layers we were looking at.”

Koroluk says that each scholarship committee member independently scores the application, so it is not a group decision when it comes to who receives the scholarship.

“The donors do not select the award winners, the committee does.”

The donors can stipulate specific criteria that should be looked at, Koroluk says.

Without donor support, the awards just would not be possible, says Koroluk.

All money donated by local supports were also matched by the Saskatchewan Innovation and Opportunity Scholarship Program which made for twice the money given out  this year compared to last year.

Koroluk says that it all came down to the money they received first.

“If it wasn’t for the donors and the people that contribute to our program, and our college staff that help with fundraising, the scholarships wouldn’t exist.”

Every dollar has been important and the amount of support that the college has received has been fantastic, says Koroluk.

Koroluk also took the opportunity to announce the start of Early Application Scholarships. Applicants to new programs for 2016 and 2017 will automatically be entered for the scholarship and the money won will be put against the applicants tuition.

Koroluk says the odds are pretty good for these scholarships.

“Some of these programs have 12 students, so if you look at it as who is going to get there application in early, all the sudden your odds of winning a $1000 are like 1 in 6.”

Koroluk says that when students receive the call, they are really excited to receive it.

“It gives you a really good feeling to be able to give that phone call and to let them know.”

Carlton Trail President and CEO, Dr. Ivan Yackel, says he hopes this makes the students’ holidays a little brighter.

Another 12 awards will be given out at the Watrous ceremony at the end of February.
