Some changes are coming to the police coverage of the Battlefords by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Battlefords RCMP S/Sgt. Phil Wilson told North Battleford council Monday changes are coming to the detachment area they are serving.

As of May 1, the Battleford portion of the detachment area will no longer be serviced by Battlefords City Detachment.

Instead, that coverage will fall under the command of the rural detachment commander.

The five officers associated with the Town of Battleford will move to rural.

"Our detachment boundaries will pretty much end at the bridge to the city," said Wilson.

Wilson doesn't foresee too many noticeable changes beyond that. There will be some impact to the city detachment schedule-wise; the changes should not affect the response of the RCMP to situations.

"The rule of thumb really is that if there is an emergency or life-threatening situation the nearest police officer will attend regardless of their detachment," said Wilson.

The news about the detachment changes highlighted Wilson's monthly report to city council on the crime statistics for the city detachment, with the trend continuing to hold steady or show reductions in most categories.
