Charges upgraded to manslaughter in Black Lake death

BLACK LAKE FIRST NATION — A man who was charged with assault on Black Lake First Nation has now been charged with manslaughter, as the victim has died.

Donny Robillard has been charged with one count of manslaughter without firearm, Section 236(b), Criminal Code in relation to the death of 48-year-old Marvin Bigeye of Black Lake Denesuline First Nation. He is remanded into custody until his next court appearance in La Ronge Provincial Court on Feb. 2.

The charges are a result of an incident Dec. 11, 2021 at approximately 11 p.m., when Black Lake RCMP received a report of an assault on Black Lake First Nation.

Officers located an injured adult man on a road in the community. He was transported to hospital with what are described as serious injuries.

Approximately four hours later, officers located and arrested an adult male in relation to this incident.

As a result of investigation, Donny Robillard, 53, of Black Lake First Nation has been charged with aggravated assault and assault with weapon.

On Dec. 18, 2021, the victim died in hospital as a result of his injuries.
