Chief Tanya Stone, new band council elected at Mosquito

MOSQUITO GRIZZLY BEAR'S HEAD LEAN MAN FIRST NATION - Chief Tanya Stone is back as Chief of Mosquito Grizzly Bear’s Head Lean Man First Nation following elections this past week.

The election took place Nov. 5 and Chief Stone was returned to office easily with 276 votes compared to 139 for Darcy Stone, 116 for Danny Starchief, 83 for Kelsey KJ Bird, 32 for John Spyglass and 4 for Gavin Armstrong.

Winning seats on the band council were Tristen Bird with 200 votes, Deborah D Stone with 183, Sanderson Wahobin with 175, Celeste Sanders (Moosomin) with 172 and Brad Starchief with 159. There were 33 candidates in the race for council.

The election itself had been delayed several months due to the COVID-19 pandemic on the reserve. Band council voted to postpone the election from its original April 26 date.

Chief Stone and the new band council were officially sworn in Monday, Nov. 8 in a ceremony that was live-streamed from the band hall.

At Battleford town council on Monday, Mayor Ames Leslie extended his congratulations to Chief Stone and the new band council at Mosquito. "Chief Tanya has been a good partner of the Town of Battleford," said Leslie.
