The students from a Grade 6/7 split class at Ecole Monseignur Blaise Morand brought on the holiday spirit by raising money for an organization called KIVA.

KIVA is a non-profit organization that provides micro-loans to people in need. Students have found various ways to raise money. For example, Camryn Miller and Brynne Nachtegaele sold nearly $250 worth of popcorn for a school movie. Their money will fund several loans on the KIVA website. Other groups of students are also fundraising by creating a variety of homemade items to sell which can be checked out at the KIVA Christmas Gift Shop at EMBM Thursday, Dece. 17 from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

Recipients use the funds for items such as clothes, food and shelter or operating businesses. KIVA allows people living in poverty to keep their dignity and self worth. As micro-loans are repaid, the students will then loan the money to another needy individual or group. Check out their website at www.kiva.org to find out more.

This is teaching the students valuable life lessons on how to be generous towards others, and that hard work and determination will pay off. The students are also learning not all people in the world are as fortunate as they are.
