Collegiate celebrates academic achievements

Students from Humboldt Collegiate Institute were honoured during the Academic Awards on June 6.

Academic Awards Committee Chairperson Carol Meachem says it is always nice to see students given this opportunity to shine. For some students, academics is their focus in high school so it is wonderful to give them this opportunity to be rewarded for all their hard work.

“It’s nice to see, especially in the case of the most improved student award, the end result of someone’s hard work over the course of their entire high school career.”

Another factor of the award ceremony that is great to see is the amount of community support provided to the students, some for the very first time.

“It’s nice to have that connection between the community and our students and acknowledging the importance of academic achievement.”

Even more awards will be given out to the grade 12 class during their graduation ceremony on June 29

Mohawks hand out annual athletic awards

After a year of hard work, athletes at Humboldt Collegiate Institute were recognized at HCI’s annual athletics awards banquet.

The June 6 banquet in the HCI Commons saw 20 different athletes collect 23 different awards in a wide variety of age categories including junior, junior varsity, and senior, and a number of different sports including golf, cross country, soccer, volleyball, football, curling, basketball, badminton, flag football, and track.

In addition to handing out awards for individual sports, the Mohawks also handed out four athlete of the year awards, for male and female junior varsity athlete of the year, and male and female senior athlete of the year.

Junior Varsity Female

After being dominated by Jenna Giddings over the past two years, the junior varsity female athlete of the year had a new winner as Julianna

Engele-Lueke took home the honours.

Engele-Lueke admitted that the award came as a bit of a surprise but said it was also an exciting moment.

“It feels like you did a lot during the year.”

In addition to being named female J.V. athlete of the year Engele-Lueke also took home the cross-country award and said it was really nice to be recognized for the hard work she put in this year.

“You do do a lot but (the coaches) also put a lot of time in.”

Senior Female

While Giddings did not win the junior varsity female athlete of the year, she did win the senior female athlete of the year, her third consecutive athlete of the year award.

Despite winning her third straight Giddings says it is still an honour to take home the award, noting a lot of the credit belongs to her teammates, coaches, and family.

“I really owe it all to them and it’s just nice that I can get recognized. But it is really my team, my coaches, and my family that deserve this award because they’ve made me the athlete that I am today.”

Giddings also took home three other awards including the girls soccer, girls basketball, and flag football awards.

With Giddings playing so many sports she says a lot of her passion comes from her family, noting they are very active in sports, which rubbed off onto her.

In addition to enjoying the physical aspects of sport Giddings notes it is the life lessons like teamwork and leadership that she enjoys as well.

Giddings says it was nice to win the athlete of the year award knowing that it was her coaches who nominated her and recognized the hard work she put in.

“It’s always nice that they think you’re a coachable athlete or always strive to do your best because that’s what athletes like us do strive to do.”

Junior Varsity Male

The junior varsity male athlete of the year award went to Cody Bergermann.

Bergermann noted it was a “great experience” being named this years J.V. athlete of the year.

“Coaches treat you like you’re one of a kind they really make you want to go harder, put more effort in.”

While Bergermann did not take home any other awards during the evening he did participate in a number of sports, with one of those being football.

Bergermann noted it felt good knowing his coaches recognized his effort throughout the season, but noted he appreciated their effort as well.

“They put a lot of time and effort into coaching and making all the practices and it’s all volunteer.”

Senior Male

The final athlete of the year award went to Jordan Seipp.

Seipp called it a cool moment when he was named this year’s recipient.

“It’s pretty cool because you’ve put in hard work for four years.”

In addition to his athlete of the year award Seipp also took home the senior football award.

Seipp noted is was nice to be recognized by his coaches for his hard work throughout the season but admitted he was not the only one working hard.

“All the other kids are putting in work but they don’t get their name on an award, there’s other guys out there working hard too.”

With Seipp being a grade 12 student he admitted that winning the award had some added meaning since it likely came at the end of his competitive sports career.

Guest speaker

In addition to handing out awards the school also welcomed back former Mohawk and member of the 1996 3A boys basketball provincial champions, Kevin Plemel, as this year’s guest speaker.

Abbs says it was Plemel’s experience with both athletics and business, which made him a good fit as this year’s guest.

“His experience with athletics and transferring into the business world and the success he’s had I thought he was a great fit being able to share that with everybody else.”

Plemel said he was humbled and thrilled when Shaun Gardiner, HCI’s other co-athletic director, approached him to be this year’s guest speaker, and admitted he was not sure what to expect.

“Reflection is a powerful thing and it was really good for me to kind of be able to put my thoughts together and to be able to share that with everybody here. It’s a powerful thing to get up in front of an audience like that. It’s not my cup of tea.”

Plemel said he thought it was important for him to give a speech to the athletes to help re-motivate them.

“Zig Ziglar said motivation is like bathing, it wears off so we need things like this all the time. So I was more than happy to hopefully be able to help them keep moving forward with their ideas and their goals.”

Plemel spoke about a number of topics during his speech including effort. He hopes students left the awards banquet with a realization that in order to succeed they must experience both successes and failures and they all must have the will to work through that.

“We all can’t just go out and win gold medals and win every game. We have to come together. And our coaches and our teachers and officials help make sport go round and the more we can realize that then the more we can stay calm in the tougher times, too.”

Season review

In total the Mohawks took home six provincial medals including golds in 1A girls soccer and junior girls 80m hurdles, silvers in golf and junior girls 200m, and bronzes in junior girls triple jump and track and field school points.

Abbs noted it takes a lot of people to have success in athletics. HCI has great students, parents, extended family, and from the community as well, he says.

“So when you can see them get a medal in any sport it’s always just an added bonus.”

The support of the community is not lost on Abbs who notes it is huge, especially seeing them at games cheering the teams on and providing whatever they can financially.

“It helps you justify that what you’re doing is meaningful and you really see it that way. And it’s really a good positive, thankful feeling that you get as a coach when you’ve got that support from the community that what you’re doing is important.”
