In the wake of the recent U.S. Powerball news, readers are probably wondering where all that money spent on lottery tickets goes.

As it turns out, a good chunk of it goes back to programs in the community.

Both the City of North Battleford and the RM of North Battleford receive a total of $100,000 each year through the Saskatchewan Lotteries Community Grant Program to fund local non-profits that provide a cultural, recreation or sport service to their residents.

Jan. 11, the Leisure Service Advisory Committee met to decide on grant requests from local non-profit groups that applied for the Saskatchewan Lotteries Community Grant Program.

Over $8,200 was approved at the January meeting and recipients include:

Bready School to assist with the cost of ski trips to Table Mountain and to repair and maintain an outdoor rink;

Battlefords 50s for a hockey tournament;

Battlefords Co-op Aquatic Centre for an ACT Therapy Swim program and a Senior Swim program;

Walking with Our Sisters North Battleford, to assist with costs of a touring art exhibition;

Community arts and culture programs;

Battlefords Highland Dancing Association for hosting the 2016 Saskatchewan Highland Dance Championships and Saskatchewan Closed Competition.
