Thousands of ghouls, goblins and superheroes will be out “trick-or-treating” the evening of Oct. 31 in North Battleford. The City of North Battleford Fire Department and the Community Safety Officers have a few tips to ensure everyone has a fun and safe experience this Halloween.
Make it a party and trick-or-treat in groups – younger children should be accompanied by an adult or guardian.
Provide your child with a flashlight or glow sticks.
Cross streets only at corners and in crosswalks. Obey traffic signals.
Keep dried flowers, cornstalks, crepe paper and other decorations away from heat and flames.
Be extremely cautious if you are using a real candle to illuminate your pumpkin. It is safer to use a flashlight or battery-operated candle.
If you illuminate your pumpkin with a candle, place it away from anything that can burn and away from children.
Remember to keep the exits of your home clear of decorations so nothing blocks escape routes.
Remind children about the danger of open flames. Practice the stop, drop androll technique.
Keep your walkways well lit.
Motorists, drive slowly, cautiously and keep alert for children crossing the street.
Never eat treats from trick-or-treating until they are examined by a parent.
“Halloween is also a good time to check your smoke alarms to make sure they work,” explained Acting Fire Chief Lindsay Holm. “Talk to everyone in your home about what to do when the smoke alarm sounds.”
