The City of Melfort is hosting a high tea event to mark Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee.

MELFORT — To celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s 70th year on the throne as a reigning monarch, the City of Melfort is hosting a high tea event at the historic post office.

Gailmarie Anderson, curator at the Melfort and District Museum, said guests can expect to have a lovely afternoon with their friends and good conversations.

“It is the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, she’s been on the throne for 70 years – longer than any other world leader,” Anderson said. “She is our queen, there are a lot of people in our area that are royalists and I think it would just be a lovely event to honour her and to have a lovely high tea for some people in Melfort and area.”

The high tea will be similar to the one held during the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in Melfort ten years ago, with scones, jams, dainties and ribbon sandwiches.

Entertainment will be provided along with a display about Queen Elizabeth II.

Anderson said the specifics of the entertainment are still being finalized, but singing, music and dance are being looked into as a possibility.

The event will be held April 9, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the historic post office on 302 Main Street. Complimentary tickets are provided by the museum. Anderson can be contacted at 306-752-5870. Tickets must be reserved.

Formal or semi-formal attire is optional.

The high tea is funded in part by the Government of Canada, who supplied $4,000 through a Platinum Jubilee grant.

“It’s an important historical occasion. It will be documented in history that she was on the throne for 70 years.”
