Honeywood Heritage Nursery manager, Judy Harley, presented cash lotto grand prize winner Malcolm Jenkins of Prince Albert with his $100,000 cheque Sept. 30 at the heritage site.
The sunny weather was complementary to the many smiles that were shared that afternoon. Malcolm Jenkins, a long time proud supporter of Honeywood, had no reservations about donating $10,000 back to the nursery.
"I was surprised when Judy called me and told me I had won the grand prize because I have never won anything in my life," says the 70-year-old philanthropist.
Jenkins and his wife, Melba, frequented the nursery after discovering the site seven years ago. The couple shared their love for lilies often purchasing varieties to complement their landscape and flower gardens or give as gifts. It only seemed appropriate to create a memorial garden at the nursery displaying a selection of the Jenkins' favourite lilies after the passing of Melba.
"This is my way of giving back to the nursery," commented Jenkins adding that he wants the nursery to be around for his children and grandchildren to enjoy.
"There's a sense of tranquility here," Jenkins said. "Every time I come, my pulse seems to drop. Even coming here today, when I pulled in, I take a deep breath and the worries of the world seem to go away. It's just a great spot."
Although Harley has some ideas on how she would like to see the lottery profits utilized, she believes the board will spend the winter prioritizing its options.
