LLOYDMINSTER – Courtlin Littlewolfe was sentenced Thursday to 10 months in jail after he pleaded guilty to two counts of obstruction of a peace officer, three counts of failing to appear in court, and driving while prohibited.

Littlewolfe, 36, was sentenced on three separate incidents.

The court heard that on Jan. 11, 2021, Lloydminster RCMP were on patrol and tried to arrest Littlewolfe on outstanding warrants when they saw him in an alley but he took off running and wasn’t arrested.

On July 3, 2021, while on patrol, the Lloydminster RCMP saw Littlewolfe and knew he was on an order not to be in Lloydminster. He refused to stop for police and drove off.

“He had three driving prohibitions at the time,” said Crown Prosecutor Kofi Nkruma-Young.

On Aug. 31, 2021, police saw Littlewolfe driving a vehicle in Lloydminster that had expired registration and insurance. Littlewolfe took off and the vehicle drove towards an RCMP officer who had to avoid being struck.  At the time, Littlewolfe was bound by release orders to remain in Alberta and abide by a curfew.

Nkruma-Young sought a one-year global sentence, which he pointed out was at the lower end for a sentence on these type of charges and with his criminal record. He told the court that Littlewolfe has eight prior convictions for driving while prohibited, 18 breach of conditions, and six fail to appear convictions.

Defence Harvey Neufeld asked the court for a six to eight month sentence. He told the court that Littlewolfe grew up in Onion Lake and has worked in the oil field extensively. He said his criminal record only dates back to 2018 and he wants to move to Edmonton where his two children reside and change his life.

Judge Kim Young sentenced Littlewolfe to 10 months in jail and gave him a one-year driving prohibition. He was given 173 days credit for time served while on remand.

Littlewolfe still faces drug trafficking charges. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 15 in Lloydminster court on a charge of possession for the purpose of trafficking. On that day, charges of driving while being pursued by police and two firearms offences will be spoken to.
