HUMBOLDT — The coming of fibre optic internet has been delayed.
Greg Jacobs, a spokesperson for SaskTel, said the project has run into some delays because of new guidelines around the amount of weight wooden poles holding power and telephone lines can support.
He said that SaskTel is working very closely with SaskPower to ensure the new infiNET fibre optic network meets the guidelines.
“Where possible, some of the wooden poles in the community will be replaced to help accommodate the new cabling required to bring infiNET to Humboldt,” he said.
The original plan was to launch fibre optic internet services in March 2020. Parts of Melfort have had the service since February.
Rob Muench, Humboldt’s mayor, said he’s disappointed with the delay.
“It's something we could probably use right now with the amount of constraint on the internet,” he said.
“I think it's something that we'll just have to wait to see what they can come up with.”
Jacobs said assuming there’s no additional unforeseen challenges, fibre optic internet should come to Humboldt later this year.
