Nipawin RCMP are on the lookout for impaired driving this holiday season.

NIPAWIN — S/Sgt. Terry Posnikoff with the Nipawin RCMP said over this month residents may see lots of red and blue lights as their push for December and early January will be on checkstops.

Posnikoff delivered his policing report calls to Nipawin council at their meeting on Dec. 13.

“Saskatchewan still has the unfortunate reputation of a very high rate of impaired driving,” Posnikoff said. “Even though those who have been killed by impaired driving has gone down a little bit in recent years I sometimes feel the statistics can be kind of misleading because you’ll have a number of good years then for no reason numbers will go up dramatically in that area”

Over the month of November, the Nipawin RCMP responded to 355 calls for service which includes 34 break and enter/ thefts, 32 mischief/ vandalism, two sex related offences, 13 assaults, five harassment/utter threats, three impaired driving, one breach of court orders, 12 disturbing the peace, two firearm/weapon investigation, five frauds, 24 under the Traffic Safety Act, and seven motor vehicle collisions.

“The report for this month looks very similar to other months. The numbers under the Traffic Safety Act weren’t nearly as high as the previous month, but that’s what usually happens when we spend a month focusing on traffic you see a higher number there and other months where we’re focusing on proactive Criminal Code preventions you see higher numbers in the breaches.”
