NIPAWIN — RCMP have been contacted after holiday lights were stolen from the trees in front of the town office in Nipawin.

The theft had taken place on the night between Dec. 3 and 4.

“We lost what pretty much looks like all our lights out front,” said Barry Elliott, the town’s administrator, adding that they are being replaced. “We want to make sure all the trees are lit up.”

According to the town, other community members have been reporting outdoor string light thefts as well.

Cst. Matt Prefontaine of the Nipawin RCMP said there doesn’t appear to be an increase this year, but every winter there are a number of lights stolen.

“I don’t know exactly why they are stealing Christmas lights, per say, it could be for their own personal use,” Prefontaine said.

“I do know that we’ve had files here where they’ve taken copper wiring and we believe them to be selling it, but as far as Christmas decorations go we really wouldn’t know the motive behind it.”

Elliott said he doesn’t know why the town’s lights were stolen.

“It could be just sheer vandalism for the sake of vandalism— we don’t know. But it is vandalism, it’s obviously a theft,” Elliott said.

“Come on, folks, everybody’s just trying to show the spirit of the season and keep everybody’s spirits up a little bit. It’s a tough time for everyone.”

Anyone with any information is encouraged to contact the town office at 306-862-9866.

Prefontaine said there are some things individuals can do to protect their holiday decorations, such as using zip ties or another fastening method to secure them.

“Other methods you could use to prevent property crime in general is [to] keep the exterior of your residence well lit,” he said. “All sheds, all buildings and vehicles it’s good to keep locked.”
