Bryan Nylander, president of North West Regional College, announced to the college's board of governors April 29 his intent to retire effective Sept. 30. Nylander has been an employee of NWRC for 23 years, with over 16 years as president and CEO.

In making the announcement Nylander indicated the decision was a difficult one and it was being made with mixed emotions.

"I have seen much growth and maturing of regional colleges, especially North West Regional College, over the past 20 plus years," he said in a press release.

"It has been my distinct privilege to serve with governors who shared my desire to push the envelope and dream bigger, and who supported the college as it developed into the first rate post-secondary institution we see today.

"The staff at NWRC is second to none, committed to providing quality education and a positive learning experience to all who attend. Through their incredible efforts I have had the honour of seeing thousands of students achieve their dreams. I thank all for the experience of the past 23 years. It has been incredibly rewarding."

Acting board chairperson Wally Lorenz indicated the board had attempted to persuade Nylander to stay longer and delay his retirement plans, but respected the decision he has made.

"Bryan has been a tremendous leader for NWRC and within the entire provincial post-secondary sector over the past 20 years. His vision and passion for NWRC have been infectious, and his achievements many," Lorenze said.

"One need only look at the tremendous growth of NWRC under his leadership and the many initiatives which were ground breaking for the entire college system to evaluate his contributions. He will be sorely missed but not forgotten."

The board will proceed immediately on recruitment of a new president and CEO, the release states.
