Preliminary hearing set for man accused of killing Muhammad Venne - La Ronge

Before an arrest was made in Mohammad Venne's murder, his family and friends held a march chanting “Justice for Muhammad" on Aug. 19, 2020.

LA RONGE - A three-day preliminary hearing for a man charged with killing 29-year-old Muhammad Venne in Lac La Ronge is set to start Nov. 29.

Keegan Nelson-Smith, 21, of Hall Lake, is charged with second-degree murder and had an appearance in La Ronge Provincial Court Aug. 23.

Venne died in hospital after he was found injured outside a home shortly after 4 a.m. on June 3, 2020. RCMP had responded to a “disturbance” at the home on Lac La Ronge Indian Band.

Nelson-Smith was arrested seven months later in January 2021. Before his arrest, on Aug. 19, 2020, Venne’s family and friends held a march down La Ronge Avenue chanting “Justice for Muhammad.”
