Thursday, Nov. 12, The Sewing Machine Store is having a quilt showing at Caleb Manor in North Battleford to showcase some unique quilts and their creators.

“In addition, and more importantly, we will be presenting a quilt to Jack Abbott under the Quilts of Valour program,” says Kathy Kennedy of The Sewing Machine Store. Abbott is a veteran and also owned Abbott Sewing Centre, where The Sewing Machine Store is now located.

Quilts of Valour is a Canadian organization committed to getting 10,000 quilts to veterans across Canada by 2018. To date, more than 6,200 quilts have been presented.

Quilts of Valour believes, “A quilted hug is healing, and that is the primary goal of Quilts of Valour Canada. The quilt you make is from the heart. What would you make for someone special you know? Making a quilt of valour is a tangible way of expressing your appreciation for who has put their life on the line for our country.”

Kennedy says, “North Battleford has many veterans and the hope is to work with quilters to get quilts to all of them.”

It is simply a matter of nominating a veteran and they will be on the list to receive one, she explains.

A visit to quiltsofvalour.ca has further information and a form to request a quilt for a veteran.

The Sewing Machine Store has the quilt squares that anyone can make up, says Kennedy. A donation of $10 gets the quilt square and a Canada mug.

“We will collect the finished squares and have quilting bees to complete the quilts and Quilts of Valour will make the presentation to the veteran,” she says. “Our hope is to increase the awareness of this program in North Battleford so no veteran is missed.

The quilt show at Caleb Manor takes place from 3 to 5 p.m. with a presentation to be made to Abbott at approximately 4 p.m.

Kennedy opened The Sewing Machine Store in Saskatoon in 1992 and expanded to North Battleford eight years ago.
