Students will soon be off on their summer holidays; apologies to parents, congratulations teachers.

And thanks to the Reid-Thompson Public Library and the TD Summer Reading Club, they will be continuing to read during their summer.

Norine Mann and Michelle Pratchler were in the Humboldt schools on June 19 and 20 to tell kids all about the fun and games that will be taking place during the summer at the library, including crafts, special guests, and contests that will all be free for kids to join.

Kids can also bring their books in to discuss during the summer book club.

The summer of 2016 saw around 200 local children register in the national program and read 3,222 books in the course of two months.

Mann says they are hoping to reach 3,500 books read this summer but previous years has seen that number reach 4,000.

The summer program starts with registration night on June 27 which will feature special guest, Jeff Burton a.k.a. Auroraman and his comics to get kids excited for the summer.

Research is consistent across North America that students do lose numeracy and literacy during the summer months, says St. Dominic Principal Dallas Puto.

Summer reading can help counter that decline in literacy.

“So many of our children achieve fantastic gains in their reading over the school year and then that momentum for parents to carry on over the summer is key.”
