The Humboldt Soup Kitchen got a much-needed boost right in time for the holiday season.
On Dec. 1, students from the Vacation Bible School at St. John’s Lutheran Church made a gracious donation of $482.90 to the soup kitchen.
St. John’s holds an annual Vacation Bible School every August, which runs for 5 days. At the beginning of each day a collection is taken to help raise money for an organization or group.
In years past the school has donated money internationally, as well as in the province of Saskatchewan.
This year they decided to donate locally in Humboldt.
Larry Durand, coordinator of the Vacation Bible School, said they chose the soup kitchen this year because he wanted to teach the kids about helping those less fortunate.
“I think it’s really important that they establish a sense of stewardship. Everything we have is because god gave it to us and we need to set the example for them that you really have to pay it forward and be good stewards of gods gifts to us.”
The Humboldt Soup Kitchen was established a little over 5 years ago in a little room at Partners Family Services.
The kitchen started with about 8 attendees and has since grown to between 70 and 80 people weekly.
Soup kitchen coordinator James Folster was very pleased with the donation from the bible school because the soup kitchen needs the communities support.
“The groups like these and donations like this, that’s the backbone, that’s what keeps it going. Without the people helping and anybody that donates like that, whether its finances or food or volunteers.”
The soup kitchen can always use more help. He explained that donations are always welcome whether it’s monetary or food donations.
The soup kitchen also accepts clothing, dishes, cleaning products and much more.
Folster noted that you don’t have to donate something to help, there are always volunteers needed to help out.
The soup kitchen will be open for the holidays and is open for those less fortunate or for those who are alone for the holidays.
Folster says how happy he was to see the communities’ support and hopes it continues in the future.
