Humboldt and District SPCA’s Winter Auction wrapped up Nov 30 with an estimation of close to $7,000 earned.
Last year’s auction reached a high of an estimated $8,000. All proceeds for the auction have gone towards the Building Fund.
This bi-annual auction is in aid of the Building Fund the SPCA have had for the past several years in the hopes of rebuilding their Humboldt centre.
The auction occurs in winter and spring, and usually brings in between $6-8,000 towards funding.
The Humboldt SPCA has no government or town funding, so they rely heavily on the money and food donations given to them from the local communities.
While there, this reporter watched as Wanda Price help a young woman bring in a lost dog that had been found wandering.
The work and effort brought in to making sure animals are treated fairly, kindly, and with great patience shows the dedication Price has for these animals.
“I’d like to thank everyone who donated and bid,” Price says. “The auction is going crazy with bids. It’s another successful auction, and I’m looking forward to the next one.”
Dog walking, petting, grooming, or just grooming the pets here brings a lot of comfort for an animal without a ‘Forever Home’.
The auction, hosted throughout the month, contained donated items from around Humboldt and area.
Currently holding six adult dogs, a litter of puppies, and a roomful of cats, the SPCA have their hands full.
The pets are mostly adoptable, most having had their vaccines and other injections to ensuring the best of health. The felines are friendly, and their comfortable when given attention.
Sadly, the fund has still far to go before reaching their goal of $750,000, and with a high rent and no source of income, it’s a struggle for keeping pets in the safety of the building without sufficient storage.
With high rates of homeless animals, adoption and love is desperately needed for these dogs and cats.
While officially closed Mondays, Price still makes the effort of coming in to ensuring the animals are comfortable, well fed, and given the attention and praise they need.
The SPCA are always looking for volunteers and dog walkers.
