The Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 9 selected two members for the Legionnaire of the year award.

President of the Legion since 2010, Esther Delainey, won the coveted award and so did long-time member Wendy Ebach.

The awards were presented Monday.

“Delainey has been a valued member who volunteers without looking for recognition. From planting and weeding flower beds to fixing or contacting the correct party to fix what requires fixing, or taking time off work for Legion business. Esther is a hands-on member.” Cpt. (retired) Bob Tannahill said.

“The Legion was formed in 1926. We assist our veterans. We have five Legion members who are veterans of the Second World War,” Delainey said. “If they need snow removal, we pay for that. We make Christmas baskets. If they needed financial assistance, we would be there for them as well.”

The president also goes on to say that they were the first branch formed in Saskatchewan.

Becoming a member of the Legion runs in the family for Ebach.

“Both of my grandpas were in the First World War. My dad’s mom, both sisters, all five kids in our family are members. One of my kids is a member now,” Ebach as she got a little choked up.

“The award means the world to me. It’s important for our vets.”

She adds that the Legion is there to make the lives of the veterans more comfortable.

Legion members across Canada dedicate countless volunteer hours to keep the home lights burning and the doors open for each branch, and for the people who fight for Canada.
