The Tisdale Mall played host to an arm wrestling competition on Oct. 17. This sport continues to grow and gain popularity and this trend was shown Saturday as some 30 people participated in the competition.
Promoter Bob Cross of Hudson Bay, who is the executive vice president of the Saskatchewan Arm Wrestling Association, was quite pleased with the turn out but would have liked to have seen more local people involved.
Cross said that many of the participants were quite involved in the sport and had travelled quite a distance to compete in Tisdale. He singled out Mark Toporowski of Hudson Bay and Ron Prebushewski of Preeceville as two of the better know wrestlers participating. Toporowski is only 19 but is developing into a fine competitor says Cross. Prebushewski took second place in the World Sit Down Championships held at Slave Lake, Alta. last year.
In Saturday's event the winners were as follows:
In men’s right arm: 0-150 pounds, Terry Hoppe of Nipawin; 151-176 lbs., Kelly Clift of Tisdale; 176-205 lbs., Shawn Johnson of Bjorkdale; 206 lbs. and over, Mark Toporowski of Hudson Bay.
In men’s left arm: 0-178 pounds, Rob Hackman of Stenan; 176-205 lbs., Shawn Johnson of Bjorkdale; 206 lbs. and over, Clinton Shuya of Preeceville.
In the ladies open class, Tracy Knudson of Porcupine Plain emerged the victor.
Cross says that with the good response at this tournament he hopes to be back in Tisdale soon.
