RCMP are warning members of the public about a "too good to be true" rental scam.

If an ad is placed somewhere indicating someone is looking for a place to rent, a con artist will contact the advertiser and offer a place to rent that seems way too good to turn down, the police say.

The con artist will say they live some place far away and that they have a residence for rent in the area where accommodation is being sought. They will then send pictures of an amazing house and state the rent is very low. They will send a rental application. Once the application is returned to them they will ask for a down payment via money transfer and say the keys are already in the mail.

If questions are asked or a request to see the house in person first is made they will get upset and try to convince their victim they are for real and if action isn't now they will give the property to one of the other interested people.

Anyone with information about this or any other crime, is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), through SaskTel Mobility at *8477, text TIP206 plus a message to CRIMES (274637) or submit a tip online at www.saskcrimestoppers.com. Crime Stoppers is anonymous and does not subscribe to call display and calls are not traced or recorded. If information leads to an arrest or charge a cash award may be granted.
