The City of North Battleford, with co-operation from Destination Battlefords, is putting together a big package and proposal to host the 2018 Saskatchewan Winter Games and the Town of Battleford will be providing a letter of support for that bid.
Monday evening councillors approved a request from Kerry Volk, marketing and event co-ordinator with Destination Battlefords, to have a letter of support submitted to them by Dec. 15.
The bid package is to be handed into the Saskatchewan Games Council by Jan. 11, however the organizers are working on an extension of that deadline, wrote Volk in a letter received by town council.
Volk indicated a document provided by Provincial Games Consultant Lorne Lasuita states the games attract 2,000 participants and approximately 5,000 spectators, officials, provincial media, VIPs and mission staff.
He added the Prince Albert 2014 Saskatchewan Winter Games generated an economic impact in excess of $2.5 million, calculated by STEAM, Sport Tourism Economic Assessment Model.
“By providing us with your letter of support,” wrote Volk, “we are setting our community up for success by creating an impressive bid package that will be competing with other communities for these games. To win this bid, the SGC has established community support, and your support, as being paramount for the Battlefords to become host.”
