A warrant has been issued for the arrest of 25-year-old Gavin Robert Howe of Maidstone as a result of a traffic stop near Waseca at about 6:25 p.m. on New Year’s Eve.

Maidstone RCMP say the stop was originally made for a traffic offence, but it was determined the driver had several outstanding warrants from Edmonton Police Service, Lloydminster RCMP and the Battlefords RCMP.

In the process of making the arrest, the man sped off eastbound and evaded police. Police say at one point the vehicle almost caused a collision with two other vehicles. The fleeing vehicle was located a short time later in Maidstone, abandoned.

Neighbourhood checks related to the initial traffic stop led to a second traffic stop of a different vehicle, where a passenger fled on foot and was believed to be hiding in a residence. Police searched the residence, but the man was not located.

Howe has been charged with obstruction of a police officer, resisting arrest, operation of a motor vehicle while being pursued by police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, failing to comply with recognizance and common nuisance.

He has outstanding warrants of arrest for mischief under $5,000, failing to appear, theft under $5,000 and failing to comply with conditions.

Howe is not believed to be a danger to the public, however police advise caution should be exercised if located and the public is asked to immediately contact 911.

Maidstone RCMP is wishing to speak to the motorists who had to take evasive action due to the dangerous operation of a red Chevrolet Optra with Alberta licence plate BPP 9755 on Highway 16.

Anyone with information about this or any other crime is urged to contact the Maidstone RCMP Detachment at 306-893-4800, Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, or online at www.saskcrimestoppers.com.
