Watershed poster contest accepting entries

The Saskatchewan Association of Watersheds is the umbrella organization for all the watersheds in the province.

The Saskatchewan Association of Watersheds is the umbrella organization for all the watersheds in the province.

The North Saskatchewan River Basin Council is one of nine provincial watershed associations within SAW and is committed to implementing its mission statement "to create and implement a plan to develop and protect source waters in the watershed so that the resource can sustain future social, economic, environmental and cultural needs."

Susanne Abe, communications co-ordinator for NSRBC, says supporting watershed education is a key component of its organization's activities.

"It is our belief that action is born through awareness that is fostered through education. In the past we have delivered various school programs across the watershed to promote watershed awareness and education. This year we are pleased to announce we have once again partnered with watershed organizations across the province to develop a provincial poster contest."

Abe invites students from Grades 4 through 6 to participate in a poster contest, "Water and Wildlife." The entry must be 100 per cent hand drawn and display content in conjunction with the theme such as scenery, fish and animals. Some possible topics include: which watershed do I live in?; plants, animals and/or scenery of the NSRB; how can I protect my water?, environmental threats to our watershed and its animals, and why are wetlands important?

Gift cards to a book store will be awarded to first, second and third place winners.

First place local entry will advance to be judged at the provincial level at the Saskatchewan Watershed Conference in April. It will be judged against the top posters from the other eight watersheds for a chance to win the provincial grand prize of a 16 GB Apple iPad with retina display and a $1,500 education bursary.

Entries can be mailed to North Saskatchewan River Basin Council, Box 458, Hafford Sask., S0J 1A0. Deadline for entries is March 29.
