AAA Sharks come so close

The Battlefords AAA Sharks had two home games on the weekend and came within five seconds of breaking their 13-month losing streak. The eighth place Sharks faced the seventh place Swift Current Wildcats at Battleford Arena and lost 2-0 and 2-1.

The Battlefords AAA Sharks had two home games on the weekend and came within five seconds of breaking their 13-month losing streak.

The eighth place Sharks faced the seventh place Swift Current Wildcats at Battleford Arena and lost 2-0 and 2-1.

Sunday, the Sharks trailed 1-0 after the first period and the score remained the same heading into the third. To their credit, the Sharks battled with only 10 skaters again Sunday.

The Sharks goal came when Shania Rhinehart broke in alone netting her first goal of the season to make it a 1-1 game mid way through the third period. Rhinehart's goal was scored on the power play, the Sharks first power play goal of the season.

The Sharks created more chances in the third, but missed the net, didn't get the shot through or had it stopped by the Swift Current goaltender. In the final seconds of the game, it looked as though the game was heading to overtime and the Sharks would earn at least a single point.

Not so fast - with five seconds left on the clock Swift Current scored after screening Rachel Mitchell during a shot from the point to take the life out of the Sharks and their fans sealing a 2-1 win.

Mitchell made 25 saves while the Sharks generated 34 shots, but Brooklyn Weisgerber stopped 33 for the win.

Saturday, the Sharks were even with Swift Current heading into the third period, as the score was 0-0.

Swift Current broke the tie with a power play early and an insurance marker late in the period to earn their second win of the season.

Jacy Akre stopped 21 of 23 shots for the Sharks while Weisgerber stopped all 19 shots she faced for a shutout.

The Sharks will look for their first win of the season Wednesday, as they travel to Prince Albert. The Sharks are 0-12-0-0 on the season while Prince Albert is 5-8-1-2 this season. The Sharks will also get a chance at revenge against Swift Current, as they face off again this weekend, this time in Swift Current for two games.
